The aim of the project is the development of a <strong>means of controlling Varroa, the first cause of parasite-induced mortality among honey bees<\/strong> in Europe and in the US, by using a biological pathway that is more advantageous and ecological than chemical products used so far. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.toulouse-white-biotechnology.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/07\/igemtoulouse2015.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5017\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5017 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.toulouse-white-biotechnology.com\/app\/uploads\/2015\/07\/igemtoulouse2015-150x150-1.jpg\" alt=\"igemToulouse2015\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\"><\/a>The varroa mite is a parasite of honey bees coming from the Asian continent, which is weakening European colonies. This is a major issue: honey bees are responsible for the reproduction of 80% of plant species as well as 35% of the global food production in terms of tonnage, through pollination.<\/p>\n\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The varroa control project consists in <strong>engineering a bacterium to produce alternately butyric acid which attracts the parasite, and then formic acid which causes its death<\/strong>. The production cycle of these molecules would follow a circadian rhythm, with production of butyric acid during the day and formic acid at night.<\/p>\n\n<p>The iGEM Toulouse 2015 team is composed of ten students from Toulouse\u00a0(seven engineer students from INSA and three Master\u2019s students from the Paul Sabatier University) and supervised by a researcher at the LISBP (INSA &#8211; University of Toulouse).\r\n\r\nThe prestigious iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) competition in synthetic biology is organized by the MIT.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\">T<span class=\"hps\">his competition aims to promote the development<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">of<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">synthetic biology<\/span> <span class=\"hps\">and<\/span> its <span class=\"hps\">teaching.<\/span><\/span>\n\n<p>\u00a0\r\n\r\nContact: igemtoulouse2015@gmail.com\r\n\r\nRead more:<\/p>\n\n<a href=\"http:\/\/2015.igem.org\/Team:Toulouse\" target=\"_blank\">iGEM Toulouse 2015<\/a>\n\n<p>\u00a0\r\n\r\n\u00a0<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>TWB provides financial support to the iGEM Toulouse 2015 team.
