Today, the majority of microbial bioproduction processes rely on batch fermentation, a model considered simple but restrictive: instability at large scale, high equipment costs, a large carbon footprint, complex cleaning procedures, and so on. In response, PRODIGES is focusing on continuous production, capable of delivering more consistent quality at a lower cost and with a reduced environmental impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A high-calibre scientific alliance in Toulouse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A high-level scientific alliancThe project brings together an interdisciplinary consortium coordinated by <a type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inrae.fr\/\" id=\"https:\/\/www.inrae.fr\/\">INRAE<\/a>, via TWB, and involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.insa-toulouse.fr\/\">INSA Toulouse<\/a>  through its <a href=\"https:\/\/bioindustries.insa-toulouse.fr\/\">CRITT Bio-Industries<\/a>,  and l\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/www.inp-toulouse.fr\/fr\/index.html\">INP Toulouse<\/a> through the <a href=\"https:\/\/lgc.cnrs.fr\/\">Chemical Engineering Laboratory (LGC)<\/a>. Together, they combine expertise in molecular biology, microbiology, process engineering and environmental assessment.<br><br>\u201cPRODIGES meets the industry\u2019s expectations for more efficient, high-quality and sustainable production. It offers a modular and holistic approach that will help overcome several major technological barriers,\u201d emphasises <strong>Fayza Daboussi<\/strong>, INRAE Scientific Director at TWB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Disruptive innovations for a sustainable transition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The aim of PRODIGES is <strong>to make continuous production<\/strong> viable and scalable, which is still not widely adopted outside the pharmaceutical sector. To this end, the project aims to ensure the safe production of recombinant proteins through:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Innovative genetic engineering strategies<\/strong> to ensure the stability of strains over many generations,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Controlled continuous culture<\/strong> with real-time monitoring of critical parameters,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tailored solutions for the <strong>efficient purification<\/strong> of products upon exit from the bioreactor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A clear and collaborative roadmap<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>TWB <\/strong>will develop the production strains and the first bioreactor prototypes,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>CRITT Bio-Industries <\/strong>will design and validate the process\u2019s purification stages,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>LGC<\/strong> will monitor the project\u2019s <strong>economic and environmental indicators<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Another step towards a bio-inspired industry<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Through PRODIGES, the partners aim to accelerate the transition to more responsible production models, whilst ensuring the industrialisation of these processes, which are as yet under-utilised.
